will downshift. there is no infrastructure in nrelease yet

Kept a casual eye on a cvsup from 27 March STABLE (gcc 2x),
to yesterday evening's head of STABLE tag and follwing build cycle just
last nite - saw one hellacious number of 'gcc3.4' strings fly past on screen...
