problem upgrading preview...

my server is running preview from just before it was slipped
last month. i cvsup and buildworld/buildkernel with new
preview, using same kernel config, only change being to add
the COMPAT_DF12 line. after i installkernel and reboot, i
can ping server but can't connect ssh/telnet or any other
service, so i need to reboot old kernel.

this server is remote and i have no physical access, only ssh.
there is nothing in the logs from when i tried the new kernel.
any suggestion how i can figure out what is going wrong and
get this working?
