I'll have to go digging to find my notes on the issue, but I did a similar
thing with a FreeBSD secondary/Windows primary setup at my old workplace,
and had similar symptoms. I was dealing with multiple domains, though,
and you are working within a single domain, which may be the difference
here.

Actually, I am working with multiple domains, I'm just using bgp4.net as an example - the problem exists over all domains.

I've never used SMART_HOST before on a secondary, and I don't know that's really the right way to do it. For my server at home, yes, I use SMART_HOST to deliver my mail. But a secondary, especially one for multiple domains, should be able to deliver mail based on the MX records.

That said, I may give it a shot just for the heck of it. ;-)

For laughs, you could try putting the new version of sendmail on DragonFly
and see if it works "right". That may be more pain than you feel like
enduring right now, though.

I've thought about that. I briefly played with the port of sendmail, but only for a few minutes. I'm going to look at that again.

It just bugs me that a way of setting up a secondary that I've used on that box for at least the past 9 months with FreeBSD doesn't work with DF, and I can't figure out why. :-/

More than one person has suggested a different program (exim or postfix), which I may try, but I like to use things in the base system when possible. I also like to know things in the base system work.

Ah well.
