I think it improves DVD playback measurably.  With DVD drive in PIO
mode (my drive doesn't work with DMA enabled, though it does under
linux), earlier I'd get occasional freezes in sound and video even on
an idle system; now I don't seem to, while things seem smoother even
while I'm building a port.
