idle times in w and finger

For awhile now, idle times in w and finger have changed their
behavior.  The old behavior only changes the idle time if a
user actually interacts with the terminal.  Now, anytime the
terminal changes (think irc, email, etc.) it updates the idle
time, even if the user hasn't interacted with terminal for
hours.  Can someone change it to the old behavior?
