thank for the pointer, i'm not aware of tmux and will look into it.

for now i'm working with 'socat' and the PTY option -- it think
this is roughly equivalent.  i also toyed with using 'netcat'
and file-sockets but figure "why bother when socat does the job
so neatly"?

personally, i think it would be nice to have something functional
in base for this and would be fairly confident about changing
`init` and/or `getty` if i thought people were open to that change
(and if not, perhaps nudge someone to suggest/implement the
"correct" solution -- for base obviously -- not knocking your
solution).

also, your point about running as alternative user is interesting
and perhaps i could butcher 'al' facility of `getty` for the
purpose?
