Why do BSD insist on having a working resolver (DNS,hosts) to function properly? It's rather insane that the resolve timeout is so hilariously high.

A good example is a sshd who lost contact with DNS. If you are lucky you'll get a login prompt after about 2 minutes. If you're not lucky, sshd just kills the connection.

Could anyone here perhaps explain the reason for this behaviour to me?
