boot -d does drop the OS into ddb, but after continuing, ctrl-alt-esc
doesn't break into ddb.
If you have a spare machine you could configure remote gdb to step
through the boot sequence. If not, I guess you could try setting break
points from ddb before continuing. I haven't used ddb so much because
remote gdb is so nice. :)
