What to use instead of 'cu'

Since DFly has followed in the footsteps of FreeBSD-5 and removed UUCP from
the base system, the 'cu' program no longer exists.
I have long used this program to talk to serial devices (modems and other
systems connected via null modem.)

What other tools are available that do the same thing?
