New official DragonFly copyright message (3 clause BSD license)
Ok everyone, this is our new official copyright template. It's
basically just the 3-clause (not 4-clause) BSD license with minor
language changes (e.g. 'regents' become 'copyright holders'). If
particular attribution is also desired, the paragraph just after
the Copyright line can be adjusted to add people involved with
major work on the file in question. Note that most of the BSD's have
already or intend to move to the 2-clause or 3-clause copyright.
The purpose of creating a 'standard' DragonFly copyright is two fold.
First, to try to consolidate as many of the various disparate
copyrights as we can get permission from the original authors to do
into this one. Second, to have something that all of our contributors
feel comfortable just adding their name too instead of a totally separate
copyright notice (the proliferation of which complicates third party use
of the code and makes the file headers rather large). Third, to have
a standard format that will make it easier for us to track people down
if/when we ever wanted to change it.
I will be changing my 2-clause copyrights on the pure LWKT code to this
baby, Hiten has already changed his, and we made a compromise with
Jeffrey Hsu on his network work (he has a separate copyright using
the 4-clause BSD license but with a 1-year sunset, so we will be
able to remove it in July 2005).
The adjustments and move towards a standardized copyright/license were
suggested by Hiten. I intend to make it a requirement for code
contributions (though occassional exceptions will of course occur, as
long as the result is open-source compatible).
