Yes, that was the point.  I've never experienced such a hang without acpi.

ACPI on linux works flawlessly, and I used FreeBSD 5 for a bit where
also it worked without hangs (though not fully functional).

Well, sometimes it hangs when probing the CD drive.  Other times it's 
when loading the linux module (apparently).  And sometimes it boots 
completely, and then there are no further hangs.  I'll check next 
time I boot.
