Not sure if modifying contrib code is the way forward. =\

Joerg, Simon, and me have been using localised patches to patch the software
on the fly during build time.

See for example the stuff I did for groff in src/gnu/usr.bin/groff.

This way you save yourself new version update trouble into contrib.
