The default BIOS setting of "Normal" allows for better speed but
seems to map the IDE/SATA devices as SCSI. "Legacy" setting puts them
back as straight IDE. Or something.

Could you mention the chip used? I suspect it's an AHCI part, which can operate in AHCI mode or legacy-IDE. AHCI is supported by NATA, but NATA isn't yet ready for prime-time.
