I know that not everybody is happy about GPL code in base, but GRUB seems fairly well documented and actively developed.


From the quick read I did at their site it looks like GRUB 2 is compatible with any OS (http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/multiboot/)

Perhaps it's worth a shot? Or perhaps NetBSD (or OpenBSD) have a solution that might fit?
