source_rc_confs is defined in /etc/defaults/rc.conf and will source 
${rc_conf_files} (which in turn is /etc/rc.conf and /etc/rc.conf.local)

no. keep on modifying /etc/rc.conf. your bug must be somewhere 
else[tm]...
