There are multiple applications.
For example, when you want configure an high
availability cluster with two nodes, it is better to
have got three network interfaces. Two interfaces for
connection between nodes and third interface for
connection with outside.
You can configure RAID for redundancy of informations,
and you may configure two interfaces in channel
bonding to redundancy of NICs. In fact, if you have
got only one interface for internal connection and the
connection fails down, then nodes don't communicate
between them.
