You can add unsetenv PKG_PATH in head of /usr/pkgsrc/mk/bsd.pkg.mk.
PKG_PATH is var which pkgsrc scripts are using, internal way. Look at
bsd.pkg.mk...

PS> Resuming bmake process in pkgsrc is quite safe, i think. It works
for me, for most (?) pkg's.
