Just a point of reference; I'm not proposing that we cater to this:


The Solaris version of tar, sadly, does choke on a fair number of GNU tar archives. Or maybe just the ones we send to our customers. :-)

(Note, also, that these machines are so barren it's unbelievable. vi, no vim or xemacs, years of Solaris security/functionality patches ignored, /usr/openwin missing a number of basic libraries and headers... ugh.)
