One other note, keeping a public diary in the form of a wiki really helped me stay on track ( https://github.com/thesjg/SJG-DragonFly-BSD-SoC/wiki ). I would encourage all students to have a plan to stay organized and on task and describe that plan in their GSoC proposal.
