Hello!

I found the following in dmesg

link_elf: symbol iconv_open undefined
. ..


A friend advised me to rebuild the kernel with the following options:

device	NETSMB
device	NETSMBCRYPTO
device	LIBMCAHIN
device	LIBICONV
device	SMBFS

and it worked. It seems I was a bit too eager to report a non-existant 
bug :)
