I've never actually done that, so anything I say is speculation.

My understanding is that 'DDM' eliminates the DOS partition table altogether.
If that understanding is correct, then my guess is yes, that is your problem.

Since the DFly /boot/loader is based on the FBSD software, it would be
interesting to know if a FreeBSD install floppy or CD behaves the same way.
Or, come to think of it, any OS installer which depends on the partition
table -- linux, Windows, etc.

What does the FreeBSD fdisk program say?
