Alas, the behavior is exactly the same.  I even recompiled loader and
watched the compiler messages to make sure it was really gcc34.

The code I think is buggy (in biosdisk.c) is recursive, and debugging
it is making me crazy(er).  I've been adding debugging printf's by
the dozen and I still find it hard to follow -- but if I can stay
awake a few more days I think I'll find it ;o)
