    Well, by your description it kinda sounds like the laptop is 
    overheating.  If an ACPI boot recognizes throttling then try
    to throttle the cpu down a bit and see if the laptop is more
    stable.  I forget the precise sysctl but it would be somewhere
    in the sysctl hw.acpi section.
