OK, that change shouldn't hurt anything.

I also agree, there's nothing wrong in principle with most of the
existing framework for now, and I don't think one needs to go in
and make sweeping changes (but yeah, "rewrite" comes to mind on
some parts.)  Any ideas I have are at this point just ideas, and in
the long run, improvements could be made but right now I feel
comfortable fixing any anomalies I see...

Actually, right now I feel like going on vacation, so any further
ideas or investigations will be more like "hmmm, how do I avoid
that big tree coming at me" while skiing.  :-)  Just thought I'd
dabble my finger in the timer code water before I dove in.
