Bah, it happened again.  I mounted my XP partition, started a tar of a
large directory of drivers.  About half way through I realized I
needed/wanted to swap out my soundcard.  I killed the tar, and reboot
the machine.  That's when it happened.

I'll keep testing and see what I can come up with.
